Buying used machinery - what really matters?

Gebrauchtmaschinen kaufen – worauf kommt es wirklich an?

Gerhard Sondermann GmbH |

For many businesses, purchasing a used machine is a smart economic decision. Whether it's woodworking, furniture manufacturing, or packaging technology, a targeted approach can save up to 60% compared to a new price, often providing robust industrial quality that will reliably operate for decades. But what should you look for when buying?

Check origin and operating history

One of the most important questions when buying used: Where does the machine come from, and how was it used? Machines from insolvency liquidations or company restructurings are often in good condition because the previous owner didn't have time to properly maintain them. It is always better to buy a machine that was taken directly from a running operation and whose maintenance history is verifiable.

Ask about:
– Year of manufacture and serial number
– Last maintenance interval
– Availability of original documentation and operating manual
– Spare parts availability for the model

On-site condition assessment

Pictures say a lot – but not everything. Superficial corrosion on the machine frame is generally harmless, but deep rust damage to load-bearing components or guides is a warning sign. Pay particular attention to:

– Linear guides and feed units (visible wear?)
– Electrical control cabinets (cable condition, control boards)
– Hydraulic and pneumatic lines (cracks, leaks)
– Gear oil condition and lubrication points

If possible, observe the machine in operation or arrange a trial run. Noises, vibrations, and start-up behavior provide valuable insights into its actual condition.

Spare parts and service availability

A cheap machine can become expensive if spare parts are no longer available. Before buying, check:
– Is the manufacturer still in business?
– Are there suppliers for common wear parts?
– Are there sources for used parts for this model?

For brands like Homag, IMA, Robopac, or Dynawrap, spare parts availability is usually well-covered even for older machines – a significant advantage over exotic brands.

Transport and installation

The lowest purchase price is of little use if transport and installation exceed the budget. Heavy CNC systems and edgebanding machines require crane transport, floor anchoring, and often three-phase power. Factor these costs in from the outset.

Conclusion

Used machines are an excellent investment – if the inspection is diligent. Prefer to buy from specialized dealers who know the machines, can answer technical questions, and provide photos and documentation. In our shop, you will find inspected used machines from direct business liquidations – transparently described, ready for immediate use.
